Some members of the LDS church who disagree with the contents of this book are posting one-star ratings even as they admit that they haven't read the book. This is an abuse of Amazon's review system, and it reflects very badly on the behavior of some members of the Mormon church.
I have some strong reservations about the Mormon church myself (particularly the church's aggressive influence in passing California's Proposition 8), but I respect my Mormon friends enormously. They are good people and most behave with great integrity. So it pains me enormously to see some members of the church abusing the review system here. It is not fair to the author of this book, it is not fair to readers who might be interested.
I have read this book and it is, as advertised, one woman's personal journey along her spiritual path. She has shared her own experiences, and in that regard it is well worth reading. Perhaps it was a mistake for the person who wrote the description to imply that the Mormon church is not Christian, but so what? Forgiveness is supposed to be at the heart of Christianity. Judging the book without reading it is also not Christian. An honest person would read the book before rating it.
Now, to review the book, it is clear that the author is a very devout woman. She has clearly spent a lot of time thinking about her faith in God, and it shows in every sentence. From a secular perspective, some readers will find that a little bit annoying, but at the same time the devotion of her writing reveals an admirable passion, even zest, for her material.
The most important aspect of this book, in my opinion, is that it represents an opportunity for Mormon women to examine their relationship with the church and what the faith teaches. In this age of long-overdue recognition of the contributions of women to the world, this book can be a revelation, in the truest sense of the word. That's why I'm giving it a five-star rating.

 An Interesting and Informative LookMay 06, 2011

into the foundational doctrines and history of a church that often seems shrouded in mystery. Although it is true that the author was born and raised LDS and left that church in her thirties, the tone is decidedly not angery, bitter or Mormon bashing. It is hard to find out exactly what LDS beleives because there is no written down creed and of course the prophets change the beliefs from time to time. The author presents a clear, historically acurate and indepth picture of what Joseph Smith and Brigham Young, and other prophets believed and taught on such subjects as who is God the Father, exactly how was man created, and who is Jesus Christ, and how is man saved? As pointed out somewhere else, the documentation is impeccable. I am someone who believes that ALL of us, no matter what flavor of religion we subscribe to, should know what our church teaches, where those doctrines came from, and be able to give a reason for what we believe. Not just, I was raised that way. This author does just that.

This literature is one of the most powerful ministering tools to put in the hands of those who are in bondage of Mormonism or who are considering investigating it! Thelma has offered an original 1830 1st edition copy of the Book Of Mormon to anyone who can disprove the information in her book "Mormonism, Mama, and Me". So far no takers. Her writing style is soft and not abrasive. She comes from a loving and caring perspective and feels that the information she covers in this book is important enough to stand up and speak in truth about the foundation of the Mormon religion. The Mormon doctrine is ever changing and the writings are continually edited and revised as to be faith promoting to its members. Many Mormon members have little knowledge of the actual facts concearning the foundation of their own religion. Thelma provides a good starting place for the reader. She includes a wonderful bibliography and some photo copies of some of the original writings from leaders of the church in the appendix. Great book to include in any library, gives a good overveiw of the complexity, difficulty, and deception of Mormonism.

This book was extremely interesting.. For those people that are slamming the author because she's speaking out about things that Mormons don't like.. well, that doesn't mean the book isn't worth 5 stars. The writing was excellent, she was clear, sympathetic and empathetic, and I am the wiser for having read her book. So it gets 5 stars!

I was struggeling to find a place and a church of my own when I started investigating the Mormon Chruch. This book really helped because like myself the author loved and cared about the mormons in her life, as do I. She doesnt bash the LDS church but informs anyone who reads this as to the beliefs and teachings of the church that even most of there own members are never told about. I learned that the God and Jesus of the mormon church is not the God and Jesus that have saved me from my sinfulness. This book is very informative and if you are learning about the LDS church I encourage you to read it because it will tell you things that mormon members will not, wether they know the teachings or not.
