Review No. 186Jul 17, 2010 What marginal value can be added to the critique of a book with 185 reviews? Probably little, so I'll keep this brief.
I found this book amazing, boring, thought-provoking, predictable, startling and mundane. That's partly because I read it at the rate of a chapter a month over the course of a year, and moods change in a year. But it's also partly because Yancey has a well-tuned facility for telling his story in waves that takes the reader on a journey of emotional highs and lows.
It may help to know a little about me before I say what I got from this book. I'm a middle-aged woodworker who has been a life-long committed agnostic. If something interests me, I try to understand it as well as I'm able and my way of understanding things relies most heavily on critical reasoning and only a dash of intuition (my wife would say only a dash of intuition because that's all I have). I'm about as post-Enlightenment as they come. There are some things that interest me that I've been unable to figure out, and who Jesus is, or was, has long been one of those things. Before I read this book, I believed that Jesus was merely an historical man, a great, wise man, not unlike, say, Mahatma Gandhi.
Having read this book and having read the NT again as I was reading it, and countless other texts as well, I have come to realize that Jesus was far more than any other great, wise man. His ethical teachings were much further evolved than the people of 2,000 years ago were prepared to accept. As I was reading the chapters on the Sermon on the Mount and the Beatitudes, I scoured other sources looking for where Jesus might have learned what he knew. Were his teachings grounded in the OT? In Greek philosophy? Were they part of a movement afoot in some part of Israel during his time? I looked in all the logical places but came up empty.
(The only place I haven't really investigated is Eastern traditions of Jesus' day. But how would a Galilean carpenter have become familiar with east-Asian teaching anyway? That seems most unlikely.)
I also wanted to know whether these were genuinely Jesus' words or just wise sayings that had been attributed to Jesus by early Christians after his death. I read The Five Gospels and other Jesus Seminar texts. There I learned that even the most liberal theologians, who consider 85% of the words attributed to Jesus in the NT probably not authentically his, think the essential teachings Jesus spoke in the Sermon WERE authentic teachings of Jesus.
I found this set of facts fascinating. Startling, really. Where did Jesus learn "Love your enemy," "Blessed are the poor in spirit," "Turn the other cheek," "Forgive your debtors"? These are thoughts that turned the logic and ethics of the entire Roman Empire on its head. They made no sense to those hearing them for the first time. They were bizarre words, the thoughts of a lunatic. Yet they do have the power of God in them. That's the only way I can think to describe it. They paradoxically bear truth about who we are that's separated from logic. If you get close enough to them to listen really carefully, you cannot escape their magnetic pull.
I now understand, I think, what some theologians call an "inaugurated eschatology," but maybe in a slightly different way than the term is commonly used. For me, it's a belief that Jesus gave us the gift of genuine foregiveness. He taught us the power of God's grace within ourselves. He showed humankind a new way toward a better world, a kinder and more conscious world, and now each of us has a responsibility to see it through, to bring that world to realization. None of us has the power to bring it about within our lifetimes, of course, and we'll stumble as we go, but each man and woman has the power to choose the path Jesus uncovered.
I certainly did not expect that my reading this book would change my opinion about Jesus, just that I would develop a better informed opinion. Much less did I expect that reading it would change my life. Yes, this agnostic found God in the words of Jesus, though I'm still not very comfortable saying that. Now I have a thousand other questions about this man. He's buried in so many layers of myth and legend, creed and canon, I don't know quite how to get at him.
I'm open to suggestions from critically thinking Christians and others where to go from here. Fundamentalists: Thanks, I appreciate your intentions, but no. I'm interested in learning about your Christ as well as the historical Jesus of Nazareth, but I'm not ready for purely devotional reading.
While I'm on the topic of Christian fundamentalism, I want to say a few words. The path Jesus revealed to his disciples should not be confused with Jesus, despite tortuous, noncontextual interpretations of John 14:6. The evidence is palpable to anyone who has read broadly, has friends of many faiths, or who has traveled outside the West that Jesus is not the exclusive way to the path. There are many Muslims, Jews, Sikhs, Buddhists, Hindus and yes, even secular humanists, who found the path far earlier in life than I did. I found the path through Jesus only because I live in a largely Christian culture. No one owns the path. Are there Christians and Muslims and Jews who think they do? Sure there are; they are all fundamentalists who skew the meaning of their holy books. Fundamentalism means forfeiting reason. I don't know how one can live the spirit of forgiveness Jesus showed us without using ALL our human faculties to their fullest.
Sorry, for a moment I forgot this is a book review, a BRIEF book review!
Some readers may resent being taken for a roller coaster ride by Yancey. His formula is to open each chapter with expressions of grave doubt and end on a note of evangelical devotion. This is only a minor irritant though and, if you're already a devout Christian, it's probably taken as a warm affirmation of faith. You'll get the most from this book if you stop periodically to absorb your thoughts, read the NT passages as they're mentioned, and read some of the bibliographic materials that are cited in the back of the book.
No matter how critical a reader you are, no matter how skeptical you are, no matter your faith or lack thereof, if you read this book with an open mind I believe it is certain to be thought-provoking. I found the experience enlightening, rewarding.
The Jesus I Never KnewMay 15, 2010 I received my order in a couple of days after placing my order. The book was used but in good condition. The price was reasonable. I was satisfied with my order.

How Could He Know Someone Who Never Existed ?Jan 09, 2010 Jesus never even existed, and ALL the factual and irrefutable documentation to enlighten one on this blissfull myth is to be revealed at jesusneverexisted ( dot ) com.
It will be an epiphany !
The Jesus I Never KnewDec 28, 2009 Whenever I need to buy a gift for someone, this is the book I buy. It is my all time favorite book--next to the Bible, of course. There's a reason why it was voted 'Book of the Year'. Phillip Yancey is a wonderful author.
Great reader of a good bookSep 27, 2009 This book is a good thought provoking review of Christianity. Yancy reviews many topics that cross most Christians' and non-Christians' minds as they review the faith. Those of you with a logical/analytic personality will connect quickly with the writing style. The CD audio book reader is very good making it into a performance vs. dry reading.
